Detroit Red Wings fans are overjoyed with Steve Yzerman’s hiring as the team’s new general manager. At this point, he can do no wrong. It’s a love fest in Detroit. Fans are fully committed to whatever he feels is best

But here are moves fans would love to see Yzerman do immediately:

Shed Justin Abdelkader’s contract: He has four seasons remaining at $4.25 million and his lack of production drives fans bonkers. He had six goals and 19 points last season. Over the past four seasons, he’s -61. He needs a change of scenery. Yzerman will need Harry Potter-like magic to make this contract disappear.

Don’t re-sign Tomas Vanek: Leave more roster spots open next season for young players like Filip Zadina, Joe Valeno and maybe the player the Red Wings select with the No. 6 pick.

Trade Jonathan Ericsson and Trevor Daley: It’s time to live with Filip Hronek, Dennis Cholowski and Madison Bowey.

Persuade a free agent to sign in Detroit: Anders Lee? Tyler Myers? Brock Nelson? These are all guys who are still young enough to be part of the rebuild.

Bring over some of his Tampa Bay crew. Assistant GM Pat Verbeek? Director of Scouting Al Murray? Both men have impeccable credentials.

Make a move no one expects: Detroit fans can’t wait to be wowed by Yzerman. It wouldn’t take much. Acquiring Colin Miller from Vegas. Make an old-school player for player deal. Entering  the Erik Karlsson sweepstakes. Trading up at the draft. Making a strong bid to land Jacob Trouba.
