Yankees, Phillies and Twins among teams vying for Dallas Keuchel

By |June 3rd, 2019|0 Comments

It would be fitting if the battle for Dallas Keuchel came down to the New York Yankees vs. Philadelphia Phillies. If you believe Las Vegas oddsmakers, the Yankees and Phillies have a reasonable shot at meeting in the World Series. According to Bovada, the Yankees have the third-best odds and the Phillies are at No. 5. Both teams need pitching help, particularly the Phillies whose starting rotation has been a roller coaster ride in the early going. Keuchel owns a career 3.66 ERA and a [...]

History tells us not to worry about Harper’s batting slumps

By |May 2nd, 2019|0 Comments

Relax Philadelphia Phillies fans, Bryce Harper’s 3-for-39 skid is nothing more than Harper being Harper. He’s still going to hit 30 home runs and drive in 100 runs. But he’s going to have some periods when the hits don’t fall. That’s who he is. His batting averages over the last four seasons were .330, .246, .319 and .243. He's not Mr. Consistency. He's a roller coaster player who always seems to end up on the top of the hill. He’s not the reincarnation of Ted [...]

No-name replacements have saved Yankees from disastrous start

By |April 28th, 2019|0 Comments

The 2019 New York Yankees appeared to be in deep trouble mere days into the 2019 season. The Bronx Bombers have an injured list full of All-Stars and a roster most fantasy owners would not recognize but are just two games behind Tampa Bay for the division lead. Every day it seems a notable Yankee has gone down. Didi Gregorius had offseason Tommy John surgery. Pitching ace Luis Severino, outfielder Aaron Hicks, and reliever Dellin Betances were injured in spring training. Sluggers Miguel Andujar (shoulder), Giancarlo [...]

There has to be more to baseball than homers, strikeouts and walks

By |April 28th, 2019|0 Comments

Pitchers are supposed to be ahead of the hitters at this time of year. The weather is cooler, the hitters’ timing isn’t where it will be in May and June. But teams are hitting home runs at a rate 1.33 per game. If that home run rate continued, it would be the highest rate since teams started keeping statistics in 1871. The strikeout rate of 8.83 per game, if it held for a season, would the be the highest in league history. Meanwhile, the league [...]

Orioles’ Chris Davis finally breaks his 0-for-54 slump

By |April 13th, 2019|0 Comments

Chris Davis proved he owns a good sense of humor when he asked for the ball after ending an 0-for-54 slump with a sharp single to right-center against the Boston Red Sox Saturday. The slump, dating to last season, was the longest in major league history. Red Sox gave Davis a nice ovation, and Oriole teammates seemed to be hooting and hollering after Davis connected off Rick Porcello. It was his first hit since Sept. 14 of last season. He was 0-for-33 before the single. [...]

Phillies should fire Kapler before his managerial mistakes hurt more

By |April 11th, 2019|0 Comments

Phillies manager Gabe Kapler must go.  He's simply the wrong man for the job, as the Phils have quickly transitioned from rebuilding in 2018, to contending in 2019. Even with the team off to its best start in nearly a decade, Kapler is in way over his head, making the wrong moves at the wrong times.     A year ago, it was unforgivable that, as a rookie manager, Kapler made a pitching change without realizing his reliever (Hoby Milner) hadn't started warming up yet.  Realistically, that move can't happen at any professional level, but certainly never at the [...]

Time for the Oakland A’s to ante up for Khris Davis

By |April 9th, 2019|0 Comments

The Oakland A’s won 97 games last season and have qualified for the playoffs four of the past seven seasons. Maybe they've earned the right to run their business operation in a frugal manner. But even from a business standpoint, it’s hard to explain why the A’s haven’t re-signed Khris Davis. Davis, 31,  averaging 44 home runs per season for the past three seasons, said he wants to stay in Oakland and seems willing to give the A’s a hometown discount. Yet the A’s can’t [...]

The Dark Knight is Long Dead

By |April 6th, 2019|0 Comments

Matt Harvey killed off his "Dark Knight" persona a year ago when he was traded from the New York Mets to the Cincinnati Reds. He hasn't posted a winning season since 2015. Last year he was 7-7 with a 4.50 ERA and that might have been his last good season. This offseason he signed a quick contract. He has a good agent but his arm hasn't lived up to the contract. In his first two starts with the Los Angeles Angels, he's 0-1 with a 9.00 [...]

He was also as skilled and productive as any left winger in his era. Steve Yzerman: Early in his career, he was a dominant offensive force. But he matured into a memorable leader and gritty two-way, shot-blocking center who [...]
